This month’s featured template designer is Kitty Chen of Kitty Designs. Here’s her story as well as her exclusive tips for keeping it simple!
What inspired you to start your business?
I actually started creating templates more than a year ago, but I have really taken it seriously since January 2010 while I started my own albums. I found out the best templates that fit me are photo-focused templates , where I can show the photos and moments the best.
What do you love most about designing templates?
I think I love every bit of it. The most joyful moment is when I see the final result: the printed album arrived at my desk. Each of my template albums comes from my real projects, either photobooks for me, family, or friends.
Do you have any time-saving tips you swear by?
I am just someone who does things right away, or in a schedule, and that makes my life easier.
What are your most popular products?
My most popular works are the Whimsical Sketches collection and 365 Inspirational Sketches collection.
What tips do you have for helping scrappers customize a template and give it their own creative spin?
When I use a template (or even a kit), I always choose a photo first, and see the color scheme of the photo, or what is the situation or even pattern of the cloths, and that becomes my guide to pick colors and elements.

I would love to subscribe to your newsletter, but you don’t offer templates that I can open. By not asking the template designers to include a universal file form that everyone can open, you are leaving out thousands of potential customers and subscribers. I use Storybook Creator by Creative Memories and we need a .page file for the template or png layers (an individual png file for every layer in the templates.) Every design program can open png files ,so it is the most universal file form for templates. Did you know that Creative Memories, a huge US traditional and digital scrapbooking company, sells in USA , Mexico, Canada, Great Britian, Germany, France, AUS, New Zealand, and Japan and all of those potential customers need png layers or .page files. Not only does Storybook need png layers , but so does My Memories software (they are growing bigger everyday), and 2 other companies software too. One of these companies can also use the .page format as well. Please don’t leave all of us out, just because we don’t use PS, PSE or Gimp.
