I’m guilty of not always putting my “toys” away. I think it’s been a lifelong issue and since I’m in my sixties, that’s a long time.

There are two main times when I don’t put my new toys away: 1) when I’m in the middle of a project (like making a series of Christmas or other cards, 2) when I order/buy new supplies.

When I’m doing a project I have a large box (~13x13x2) on the corner of my table to hold the supplies I’m going to need. My table is big enough that the box doesn’t get in the way when I’m working and the box is large enough to hold full 12×12 sheets of paper and deep enough that ink pads, bottles/jars of embellishments etc, won’t fall out and roll all over my table. So long as I remember to put the things I’ve been using in the box when I’m done for “now” then I’m ready to jump right in when I next want to work on the project.

When I get new “toys”, I usually open the box and take everything out if they came by UPS/FEDEX, or dump the bag on another desk in the craft room because I have other things to do right away (like make a meal, usually.)

I’ve noticed that recently I’m getting better at putting other things away – like clothes or stuff from Walmart on our monthly shopping excursions but the craft and office supplies don’t get the same treatment. And I know why – I don’t know where to put them since for those supplies, it’s not as easy as “I can’t buy something new unless I get rid of something I already have” which is my basic process for clothing. Plus – I have so much stuff that I don’t have the room I need to put things away where they belong (a lot doesn’t have a specific place.)

So, this week I’ll spend at least 15 minutes in the craft room cleaning off the scrapping table and putting away supplies not needed for my current project (making note cards for a raffle box.) I’ll only promise myself to do it once for sure. That way I won’t get discouraged if I don’t manage to do it every day which would be ideal.
